At least 5,000 workers in the province of Catanduanes will benefit from the emergency employment program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

On Tuesday, the Secretary of Labor and Employment, Silvestre H. Bello III, said that this was in response to the call of the governor of Catanduanes, Joseph Cua, to include them in the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged / Displaced (TUPAD) program of the DOLE program.

“I will send an amount to hire at least 5,000 people to clean the streets and debris from Typhoon Rolly,” Bello said.

Catanduanes was one of the provinces that suffered the most devastation from Super Typhoon Rolly.

The typhoon destroyed between 10,000 and 15,000 houses built with light materials, the seaport and 80 percent of the electricity poles in Catanduanes.

It left thousands of people in the island province homeless and without electricity or water.

Bello said that they will prioritize the implementation of their TUPAD using funds from the Bayanihan to Recover as One (Bayanihan 2) in the area affected by the typhoon.

“Our focus will be on the most affected areas such as Region 5, Region 4-A and Region 4-B, Mr. President, because these are the ones that really need emergency employment,” Bello said during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte last Monday.
