MANILA – The Department of Labor and Employment said on Friday it will distribute P13 billion in cash aid to workers fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bayanihan to Recover as One Act (Bayanihan 2) funds will be divided among the following programs, said Undersecretary of Labor Joji Aragon.

  • 5,000 million pesos of unique assistance to some 993,000 displaced workers from the formal sector
  • P6 billion for emergency employment of around 863,000 informal sector workers
  • P2 billion for 200,000 repatriated migrant workers

“Maybe by this week or early next, it is working, which means it will continue,” he said at an Always Ready public briefing.

(Perhaps for this week or early next, this will already be continuous).

Bayanihan 2 is the Philippines’ second COVID-19 emergency measure authorizing the government to spend P140 billion to help sectors affected by the pandemic. The law also allocates P25 billion in reserve funds in case the government needs more money to fund projects related to COVID-19.

The pandemic has put some 3.3 million Filipinos out of work, according to labor department records. This is less than the Philippine Statistics Authority estimate of 4.6 million unemployed Filipinos in July.

The health department recorded 1,761 new coronavirus infections and 33 more deaths on Thursday. In a bulletin, the agency said total confirmed infections had risen to 376,935, while deaths had reached 7,147.
