The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) said Sunday that the Philippine nurse in the United Kingdom, who was recognized by the Queen of England, had presented honors to the Philippines.

Charito Romano was included in the New Year honors list of recipients of the Medal of the Order of the British Empire awarded by Queen Elizabeth II.

Romano was cited for her exemplary work in home care at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK.

“Our congratulations may not be enough to express how our government thanks you for making our people so proud,” Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello 3rd said in a statement Sunday.

Romano has been a staff nurse at Arbrook House Care Home in Esher, England since 2018.

In March 2020, Romano said that the manager of the nursing home trusted her to make immediate decisions to help her patients and protect her residents and keep them safe from the virus.

in the worst conditions and personal risks. What an inspiring story for our foreign workers as we begin the new year, ”it was noted.

She and her coworkers worked tirelessly to make sure that no one in the nursing home got infected.

All of their efforts paid off: From March to December 29, Arbrook House was free of coronavirus.

Romano, originally from Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, obtained her nursing degree from Wesleyan University Philippines and worked in the Philippine Population Office in her province. It was her RLE coordinator at her school who encouraged her to work abroad.
Romano went to the UK in 2002 on a work visa. Your spouse also works in a nursing home as a senior caregiver. They have three children.

When asked what advice he could give to Filipino nurses who had just arrived in the UK, Romano said it is important to embrace English culture.

He also emphasized the importance of dedication to his work.

“Be yourself and always work with your heart. There will be difficult times, but you can survive. If you work with your heart and always ask the Lord for guidance, you will never go wrong, ”he said.

Romano shared that she wanted to honor the country since she takes into account that she not only represents herself, but her organization, her profession and her country, in everything she does.

“This is the moment to show the world what we can be. Whatever you do, you dedicate yourself to it. Always remember that wherever you are, whatever you do, you will always shine because Filipinos are very hard-working, ”he said.

“I share this award with all my colleagues and with the entire Arbrook team. If it weren’t for them, I won’t be able to have this award. It’s a team effort, ”he added.
