FOR the fifth day in a row, deaths from coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) exceeded 90 according to the Department of Health (DOH) case report.
The agency reported 102 deaths on Sunday, August 30, 2020, the third highest on a single day in August and the highest in five days in a row.
The DOH reported 99 deaths on August 26, 97 on August 27, 91 on August 28, and 94 on August 29.
Most of the deaths occurred in August. Of the 102 reported on Sunday, 78 occurred in August, 21 in July, two in June, and one in April.
As of Sunday, the death toll from Covid-19 was 3,520.
New cases of coronavirus infection accelerated again Sunday, with the DOH confirming an additional 4,284 cases according to reports submitted by 100 diagnostic laboratories.
The total count of cases in the country as of August 30 was 217,396, after the elimination of 19 duplicates.
About half of the new cases, 2,207, were from the National Capital Region (NCR).
The provinces with the highest number of new infections were Laguna with 327, Cavite with 191, Batangas with 161 and Rizal with 147.
Nearly nine out of 10 new infections, or 3,779 (88 percent), occurred in the last two weeks of Aug. 17-30.
Of the total case count, 56,473 remained active, following DOH’s declaration of recoveries based on the time-based tagging methodology.
The DOH announced 22,319 recoveries on Sunday, bringing total recoveries to 157,403.
Based on the time-tagging methodology, the DOH states that patients have recovered from infection after 14 days if no further symptoms develop.
Among the 56,473 active cases, 91.3 percent have mild symptoms, while 6.1 percent experience no symptoms.
The proportion of critically ill patients increased to 1.6 percent (16 out of 1,000), while severe cases comprised 1.1 percent. (Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)
