MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) issued a reminder Saturday on respecting the privacy of patients infected with the coronavirus disease after receiving reports that lists with names of COVID-19 patients are being shared on social networks.
The Philippine Department of Health said that the Reportable Health Events and Illness Notification Act requires health authorities to “access personal information to enable effective response,” but also requires “ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality. of the personal information entrusted to them “.
DOH said relevant information should only be shared with public health authorities that are knowledgeable about how to keep the data private.
Sharing vital patient information is illegal and, at the same time, can cause stigma for patients, the DOH also noted.
“Additionally, we ask the public to refrain from sharing these lists on social media. This is illegal and perpetuates the stigma around COVID-19. Our Kababayans are going through enough already, let’s not make their situations worse, ”the statement read.
