MANILA, Philippines – Health Secretary Francisco Duque III was elected this year’s president of the Western Pacific regional committee of the World Health Organization.
The Health Department said Wednesday that the committee is made up of 37 member states in the Western Pacific region.
The committee is a governing body made up of ministers of health and senior officials from the Western Pacific member countries that meet annually to discuss health problems in the region.
The DOH said Duque will lead discussions on the coronavirus pandemic, vaccine-preventable diseases and immunization, aging and health, safe and affordable surgical interventions, and the program’s budget for 2022-2023.
“They meet every year to formulate policies, supervise regional programs, report on their projects, and consider, review, and support new initiatives,” said Undersecretary of Health, María Rosario Vergeire.
“The resolution and decisions taken during the session will guide the work of the regional and country offices for the following year, which is 2021,” he added.
