DOH: 18 injured by fireworks, 1 hit by stray bullet in Central Visayas

The Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas reported 18 cases of fireworks-related injuries between 12 p.m. on December 16, 2020 and 11:59 a.m. on January 1, 2021.

This represented a decrease of 111 percent from the 38 cases recorded in the same period of 2019 and 2020.

The majority or six of the reported injuries involved residents of the city of Lapu-Lapu, followed by the city of Cebu and Bohol with three cases each; Mandaue City and Cebu Province with two cases each and Negros Oriental with one case.

Negros Oriental also reported a stray bullet victim.

This involved an 11-year-old boy from Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, who suffered an abdominal injury secondary to a stray bullet.

DOH-Central Visayas, in its injury surveillance report, said the victim was admitted to Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital.

The health department said no fireworks ingestion or deaths were reported.

The reported incidents involved fireworks such as picollo, candy bomb, bongalo, kwitis, triangle, araw, bomb shell, fountain and libintador.

Of the injuries recorded, nine had hand injuries, three had eye injuries; three suffered head injuries; two in his arms; and others had been injured in the abdomen, leg and neck.

The majority of the 11 cases were reported to have occurred on the streets. Four of the incidents occurred inside their homes; another two in other areas and one in an area designated for fireworks activity.

Of the 18 cases of past Christmas celebrations, 10 were injured by active participation with fireworks, while the other eight were cases of passive participation. (EDT)
