Disruptor Beam changed its name to Beamable and became a technology platform that enables mobile game developers to scale, monetize, and maintain their games. The move was expected after Tilting Point acquired Star Trek: Timelines for Disruptor Beam: Mobile and PC gaming, as well as the team that made it.
Beamable CEO Jon Radoff said in an interview with GamesBeat that one of the biggest challenges facing game makers is balancing precious resources. It’s about the tension between creating what they and their players love and the need to make the business work. His company is spinning to help game studios find that balance.
He said Beamable enables game developers to turn their products into scalable and sustainable businesses by incorporating world-class commerce and social functionality.
“It is a new life in business, a complete reboot using the technology we use to build Star Wars: Timelines,” said Radoff. “It’s basically everything you need to run a game as a service. We took it out of the game and included it in a technology that can be sold to other developers. The company’s rebirth is now based on this technology.”
Beamable has cloud-based software as a service (SaaS) that enables in-game storefronts, merchandising, content management, and intense social interactions for gamers, designed to scale as large a population of gamers as necessary.
And it also has a front-end technology that bridges the gap between backend services, the Unity 3D editor environment, and the live gaming experience, making it easy to create, maintain, and deliver sustainable games. Features include commerce services, content management for live events without having to update a game client, and social tools that help developers spread the word about their games.
Previous Disruptor Beam games, such as Star Trek: Timelines and Game of Thrones: Ascent, always had real-time authoring channels that allowed the company to provide fans with content related to television shows, making an argument for a episode appears almost immediately within a game. “In the past, people built technologies like this from a middleware perspective,” said Radoff. “But we democratized it for game developers, so you can drag and drop these features directly into your game.”
Beamable is available through an early access program, and is open to live games, or they plan to launch in the next 12 months. Beamable has a dozen employees.
