Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said Tuesday that 10 mayors from areas affected by the typhoon would be summoned to explain their absence during the super typhoon “Rolly” attack.
Charges can be brought against the officials, he added.
Year told The Manila Times on Tuesday that two of the mayors are from northern Luzon, four from Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), two from Bicol and two from Visayas.
“I cannot give their names yet until investigations are carried out and cases are filed against them,” he said.
These officials could be charged with breach of duty, gross negligence and / or violation of a memorandum issued by the Department of the Interior and Local Government that requires the presence of 100 percent of mayors before, during and after a typhoon or any other calamity.
When the typhoon hit the Philippines, the #NasaanAngPangulo was trending online when President Rodrigo Duterte was not seen during the typhoon’s devastation.
Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said the president was in Davao city and was monitoring the effects of the typhoon from his hometown.
Duterte surveyed provinces hit by the typhoon on Monday.
The typhoon left 22 dead.
