Dianne? Dianne! Senators share laughter as Villar calls staff during Senate session

MANILA – Senators were left wondering and laughing Monday after Senator Cynthia Villar asked for a certain “Dianne” in the midst of the “hybrid session” of the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, who was about to begin deliberations on a bill, was interrupted when Villar, who forgot to silence his microphone, called his staff.

“Oh, anus sagot I say, Dianne? Dianne! Dianne!” Villar intervened.

The senators were speechless for a few seconds until Senator Sonny Angara jokingly said, “I moved so Dianne can be recognized, Mister President.”

The senators, including Villar, were seen and heard laughing at the farce in the midst of a generally formal legislative procedure.

“We recommend that Senator Villar remove his microphone,” said Senate President Vicente Sotto III.

Villar apologized and the session resumed normal procedures.

The Senate switched to hybrid sessions last week to limit possible exposure of lawmakers and Senate staff to 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The chamber is expected to hold a combination of physical and teleconference sessions until Congress suspends next month.
