DETAINED activist Reina Mae Nasino was finally able to visit her daughter’s wake, albeit for a much shorter time.
This after the Regional Court of First Instance of the city of Manila modified its previous order that would have given Nasino a three-day license from today until October 16.
Instead, the trial court shortened his visit to his daughter’s wake from 1 pm to 4 pm on October 14 and October 16 for the funeral at the request of the official in charge of the female dormitory of the city jail from Manila, Maria Ignacia Monteron.
Monteron cited the lack of sufficient personnel to escort Nasino for three days in a row as the main reason for seeking a shortened license for the detainee.
Monteron also noted that according to the 2015 Comprehensive Operations Manual of the Office of Prison Management, an inmate cannot stay more than three hours in the place where the remains of the deceased relative are found.
In a statement, Kapatid, a support group for families and friends of political prisoners, said the ruling is “a great and cruel injustice.”
During Wednesday’s hearing, the group said jail officials also cited health reasons for opposing the license, in addition to the lack of personnel to escort Nasino.
“Being an activist doesn’t make Reina Mae less human. It does not even deny your rights as a person. She deserves to be by her son’s side until the funeral. Fairness and compassion, simple humanity, should be standard for everyone, ”Kapatid said.
Nasino, who faces illegal possession of firearms and explosives, was arrested on November 5, 2019, and gave birth on July 1.
River, her three-month-old baby died of pneumonia on October 9.
