MANILA – The Department of Education television channel was criticized again by social media users after it broadcast the wrong solution to a math problem.

In the lesson, which aired Tuesday, the problem sought to determine the value of “x” at “2x = 0”.

“We divide both sides by zero to get the value of x, which is zero,” said the teacher-speaker.

But netizens, like Jemima Manansala, pointed out that the solution was wrong.

Manansala, whose Facebook post of the math lesson has received thousands of reactions and actions so far, said he saw the error while reviewing the DepEd TV episodes out of curiosity.

“It was very easy for me to see the mistake. Favorite subject ko kasi ang Math (My favorite subject is Mathematics),” he said.

“Honestly, I was disappointed when I saw that mistake. A lot of kids trust … the DepEd program. Too bad for those kids who have learned that way of solving the value of a variable,” Manansala said. , who has 2 children in school this year.

A public school math teacher interviewed by ABS-CBN News, who asked not to be identified, explained that the result of a division by zero is not defined.

To get the value of “x” or get to “x = 0”, both sides of the equation would have to have been divided by 2 instead of 0, said the teacher, who has been in the profession for more than a decade.

ABS-CBN News reached out to Diosdado San Antonio, DepEd’s undersecretary for curriculum and instruction, who said he would check the matter out with his team.

In August, several social media users also criticized DepEd TV for emitting grammatically incorrect sentences during its test broadcast.

The Secretary of Education, Leonor Briones, said that the department has established control measures to avoid errors in its programs.

Television-based instructions are one of the components of distance learning, which is DepEd’s response to the ban on face-to-face classes due to the continuing threat of COVID-19.

Some 22.5 million public school students in the Philippines resumed their studies on Monday.
