The Department of Education (DepEd) apologized Wednesday for the errors in the math equations that aired on DepEd TV.
Undersecretary of Education Alain Pascua admitted the mistake on the second episode of DepEd TV’s Mathematics 9 aired on Tuesday.
Jemima Manansala pointed out the error on her Facebook account. Since then, it has garnered 21,000 reactions and 26,000 shares.
“Our apologies to all students, parents, and teachers for this mistake. We will strengthen our quality assurance to make sure our DepEd TV episodes turn out to be perfect, ”Pascua said in a statement.
The equation in question was: 2x = 0 | 2x / 0 = 0/0 | x = 0.
Mathforum.org explained that “division by zero is an operation for which it cannot find an answer, so it is not allowed.”
“You can try to come up with a good set of rules, but it always leads to nonsense, so to avoid all the problems, we just say there is no point in dividing by zero.”
Therefore, the correct solution to the equation would be to divide both sides of the equation by 2, to obtain x = 0: 2x = 0 | 2x / 2 = 0/2 | x = 0.
Pascua said the department will review the video episode before uploading it to DepEd Commons and its YouTube channel.
DepEd was also hit for airing English exercises with “glaring” grammatical errors during the DepEd TV test in August.
DepEd TV airs on IBC-13 and other partner networks across the country.
