Deocratic operatives are keeping a close eye on Latino voters tonight in Florida, one of the first states with a significant Latino population to report results.
A key concern for Democrats heading into Election Day was Joe Biden’s ability to woo Latinos, a diverse and growing demographic in several key states, including Florida, Texas and Arizona. Democratic organizers in those states had raised concerns about Biden’s outreach to Latino voters early in the campaign, which led to Biden’s operation spending labor and money converting Latinos, but concerns persisted. .
The problem is acute in Florida, particularly in populous Miami-Dade County, due to the large numbers of Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants, two groups that tend to be more conservative than others.
Early results from Miami-Dade, Florida’s most populous county, show a tighter race between Biden and Donald Trump in 2020 than when Clinton faced Trump in 2016.
Trump’s campaign focused heavily on Miami-Dade County, building an entire messaging campaign around painting Biden as a socialist in an attempt to appeal to the county’s Cuban and Venezuelan-American populations.
“If Biden wins Florida by that margin in Dade (and suppose he gets 1 point or so with eday), it will be incredible and unprecedented,” said Florida-based Democratic data analyst Matthew Isbell, tweeting as the first results of county. He came in.
The question for Democrats will be whether Biden can outperform Clinton in places like Duval and Hillsborough County, two other populous metropolitan centers in the state, to make up for his possible underperformance in the Miami area.
