MANILA, Philippines – Filipino karateka James De los Santos seeks his 12th gold medal in 29 tournaments when he entered the final of the Venice Cup on Sunday in September.

De los Santos also has a chance to become World No. 1 if he takes gold in the online tournament.

Eduardo Garcia from Portugal remains at the top of the standings with 8,125 points, but De los Santos is not far behind at No. 2 with 7,675 points.

De los Santos will face Nejc Starniša in the Venetian Cup final.

Interestingly, it was the semifinals that had the most history behind with De los Santos’s opponent, Matías Moreno, informing the Filipino martial artist that he is not in his best condition the night before the competition.

“We have already competed with each other several times. The night before the semifinals, Matías sent me a message on Instagram and told me that he couldn’t act because he felt bad, ”De los Santos said of his Swiss opponent.

“They gave me the opportunity to perform any kata I wanted, even a basic one. But I still decided to perform a high kata. As they say in the Dojo Run (principles) of karate: Respect others. This is my way of respecting my competitors. I wanted him to recover soon and I am looking forward to seeing him in the next tournaments. “

De los Santos has won 11 gold, two silver and three bronze medals in a span of 28 tournaments.

It also peaked at No. 2 on the world rankings in August.
