DAVAO CITY – The city government has extended the 24-hour ban on alcoholic beverages and the curfew until the end of the month as part of its strict measures to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte last week signed Executive Order No. 55-B that provides guidelines for the extension of the 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew in the city. Meanwhile, another order, EO No. 59, reimposed the 24-hour liquor ban.

It should be recalled that on November 2, Duterte reimposed the 24-hour ban on alcoholic beverages “to avoid exposing people to COVID-19 during rampant drinking sessions.”

The curfew was also revived when the city of Davao returned to the general quarantine of the community on November 20.

In December, the city of Davao was among the top areas in the country reporting a high daily number of COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, Duterte warned restaurants, sari-sari shops and similar establishments of the “one-hit rule”, according to which a store would be closed immediately in the first case of violation of the ban on alcoholic beverages.

Meanwhile, the mayor also regulated mass rallies and banned non-essential travel within the city until June 30, 2021.

Under EO No. 69, Duterte said that “it is necessary to regulate mass gatherings in all public places to reduce the risk of transmission.”

The EO cited the need to limit the movement of people in the city of Davao to access only essential goods and services or for work purposes, and prohibit unnecessary public holidays.

“All mass concentrations (assemblies of more than 25 people in an event or activity) are prohibited except buses, banks, hospitals, restaurants and other similar instances where people do not converge for the same purpose,” he said in the EO.

The order also requires the observance of basic health protocol in public places, such as the use of face masks, the physical distance of at least one meter between all people and frequent hand washing. Proper use of face shields is also recommended.
