Although Dalgona coffee is this year’s most searched keyword in The “How To” category from Google Trends, Some Filipinos shared that they have yet to get a taste of the latest stirred coffee trend in this quarantine period.

According to Google’s “Year in Search 2020” for the Philippines, Filipinos were most interested in making iced coffee this year.

The phrase “How to make dalgona coffee?” landed in the top query for the search engine giant’s “how to” category, beating the coronavirus-related query, “How to wear a surgical mask?” which came in second.

The third main search was related to health: “How to calculate the BMI?” or body mass index, a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

Google noted that Filipinos were also interested in how to make flan de leche or the Filipino version of crème caramel, boosting the immune system and dividing fractions, among others.

Meanwhile, dalgona coffee, according to a lifestyle magazine, was inspired by South Korea’s sweet dalgona, which is described as a “caramel cake that resembles the creamy scoop that tops iced coffee.”

The drink is based on three ingredients: instant coffee, sugar, and hot water.

One food magazine describes it as an “upside down latte where coffee is replaced by iced milk, while steamed milk is replaced by coffee foam.”

Reports say the drink initially went viral on micro-video platforms Tik Tok and Instagram.

Eventually he invaded Filipinos’ social media as people displayed images of his creations, especially during the heyday of the enhanced community quarantine or during the first months of the confinement in March.

In terms of quarantined food trends, dalgona coffee has been replaced by banana bread, baked bread, and baked sushi, as Filipinos busy themselves with preparing their own meals while quarantined at home.

But despite the popularity of the smoothie coffee drink, there are still others who claimed to be unfamiliar with its taste in terms of experience.

“By 2021 I have never tasted dalgona coffee,” a Twitter user he said with a tired emoji.

“2020 Stuff I Couldn’t Eat: Baked Sushi, Tiger King, Dalgona Coffee (but if I look at the description online why?)” Another shared online user.

“Me too, lagged, I still haven’t tried dalgona coffee”, a Philippine wrote with a smiling emoji.

Columnist and blogger Naomi dice shared a screenshot of the “How To” list and wrote in response to dalgona coffee topping the most searched item in the category: “I never did.”

Dalgona coffee is made by whisking instant coffee, sugar, and hot water (preferably with a mixer) until it becomes a light brown fluff.

The mixture is then poured into a glass filled with ice and milk.

Some personalities who have joined the trend include restaurateur-vlogger Erwan Heussaff who has recreated the recipe with chocolate and Vietnamese egg yolk.
