Utility Company Balances “Tried and True with New” for Greater Environmental Benefits
SAN ANTONIO, September 26, 2020 / PRNewswire / – CPS Energy, the nation’s largest municipally owned electricity and natural gas utility, has released its 2019 Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Report. The report, which includes data through calendar year 2019, highlights the focus and results that the utility and the community have achieved together. Environmental benefits include significant reductions in carbon dioxide (COtwo), Nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SOtwo), Mercury (Hg) and particulate matter (PM), along with reduced water use and waste production.

- Carbon dioxide (COtwo) Reduction – Coal Intensity has been trending downward since 1980. With an increasingly diverse mix of gas, coal, wind, solar, and nuclear power sources, as well as value-based commitments to energy efficiency and conservation. customer energy, CPS Energy Under his COtwo emission rate of 2,000 pounds per megawatt hour of generation at 827. - Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) Reduction – By implementing NOx emission controls in power plants, including low NOx burners, Separated Super Combustion Air (SOFA), and Selective Catalytic Reactors (SCR) and shutting down their two oldest coal-fired units ( JT Deely), CPS Energy has reduced NOx emissions by 78 percent since 1997.
- Sulfur dioxide (SOtwo) Reduction – CPS Energy has reduced SOtwo by 97 percent since 1997. Its two oldest coal units were closed at the end of 2018. Additionally, its remaining and much younger coal units at its fir plant have highly efficient sulfur dioxide scrubbers.
- Particulate matter (PM) and mercury (Hg) reductions – The largest drop in PM emissions occurred in 2007 and 2008, when Deely’s older precipitator control technology was replaced by more efficient baghouse particulate removal systems. Both Spruce units were built with these more efficient baghouse systems, which have the ability to remove more than 99 percent of particulate matter.
- Reduction of water use – CPS Energy built Lakes Braunig and Calaveras in the 1960s to cool our power plants. These well-maintained lakes became recreational community assets. When using treated wastewater, CPS Energy saves about 11 billion gallons of drinking water each year.
- Waste reduction – Every year, we recycle most of our waste material instead of disposing it in landfills. From 2018-2019, 16,000 fewer tons of waste went to landfills.
- Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP) – HE PASSEDThe goal was to save 771 megawatts (MW), equivalent to a large power plant, of electricity from 2009 to 2020 through a variety of residential and commercial energy conservation and efficiency programs. CPS Energy, in partnership with its customers, exceeded this goal and achieved 845 MW of pent-up demand reduction, one year earlier and with no incremental debt or capital expenditure for 13 years.
In concert with his Flexible path, CPS Energy will launch a Request for Proposal (RFP) in late 2020 for your FlexPOWER packageYE. It will look to add up to 900 MW of solar power, 50 MW of battery storage and 500 MW of additional firming capacity, which will help to cover cases where solar parks are not producing power (i.e. during bad weather, for the night, technical cuts, etc.).
