DAVAO CITY: A COVID-19 patient sneaked out of an isolation facility here over the weekend and has now disappeared, the local government said.

Mayor Sara Duterte confirmed that one patient, who tested positive for the highly infectious disease, dodged health workers and security forces and left an isolation center on Saturday (May 9).

“We are looking for a patient who sneaked out of a room where she was confined,” Duterte said Monday afternoon (May 11).

Duterte declined to reveal the patient’s identity, but said she was a resident of Barangay 23-C, one of COVID-19’s hot spots in the city.

Local authorities rushed to Barangay 23-C to search the patient’s home, but were unable to find her there.

“It is currently missing. She is not at home and barangay. We don’t know where he is at the moment, “said Duterte.

The mayor added that there were also reports of other patients trying to escape from the quarantine facilities.

The local government previously said that the city had been giving patients everything they needed to ensure their comfort and cooperation.

Duterte said one of the possible reasons for the leak was the patient’s desire to be reunited with her family.

Additional security forces had been deployed to protect the isolation facilities.

The Health Department, in its latest bulletin, reported 159 confirmed cases in Davao city with at least 20 deaths.
