More than 5 percent of the Philippine National Police personnel have contracted the new coronavirus, after their cases surpassed the 12,000 mark on Friday.

Among the new cases recorded is Police General Debold Sinas, the head of the PNP, who tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on Thursday night.

Of the 12,001 confirmed cases in the PNP, 752 are active cases.

Police Brig. General Ildebrandi Usana, a PNP spokesman, said Sinas has remained “in a good mood” despite contracting the virus.

Sinas was asymptomatic and volunteered to be confined to the Kiangan treatment center within Camp Crame.

Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar, deputy director of administration, will be the PNP officer in charge until Sinas has fully recovered from the respiratory illness. —Dexter Cabalza
