MANILA, Philippines – Six of 139 hospitals in Metro Manila they were at a critical level in terms of bed capacity only for patients with COVID-19, according to data from the Department of Health (DOH) as of December 10.
Of the hospitals at the “critical” level, only the Philippine Children’s Medical Center achieved 100 percent bed occupancy.
DOH classifies COVID-19 bed occupancy levels in healthcare facilities as critical, high risk, moderate, and safe.
At the critical level, hospitals have already reached more than 85 percent of their bed occupancy for COVID-19 patients.
Hospitals are classified as high risk if 70 percent, but no more than 85 percent of their COVID-19 beds are occupied.
Hospitals with a COVID-19 bed capacity of between 60 and 70 percent are classified as moderate.
And hospitals fall below the “safe” level if the bed utilization rate is less than 60%.
The bed occupancy rate for all of Metro Manila remains in the “safe” zone at 36.8 percent, or 2,542 of the 6,906 total beds occupied.
INQUIRER.net analyzed most of the available data, which is as of December 10, 2020, according to the DOH COVID-19 tracker.
The article aims to show how prepared Metro Manila hospitals are if there is a sudden increase in COVID-19 infections.
