Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 17) – The Presidential Electoral Court has thrown out motions to inhibit Supreme Court Justice Marvic Leonen from participating in deliberations over the ongoing election protest by former Senator Bongbong Marcos’ vice president, senior sources confirmed to CNN Philippines on Tuesday.
The sources said the court voted unanimously against the motions, which were presented consecutively by Marcos and Attorney General José Cálida on November 9.
The court is also asking Calida to show why he should not be cited in contempt for acting to inhibit Leonen from the case, they added.
Marcos previously denied having had any kind of communication with Calida prior to the presentation of his motions, which had the same objective of removing Leonen from the electoral protest case against Vice President Leni Robredo.
In his motion, Marcos had cited the magistrate’s alleged bias in favor of Robredo, who beat him by 263,473 votes in the May 2016 elections. He also accused Leonen of sitting on the case for months.
