In India, where there are now more than 25,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, misinformation, and attacks on the living who have contracted the virus and the dead, are becoming widespread, Hannah Ellis-Petersen, reports the Guardian’s South Asian correspondent.
Digging the grave was slow and heartbreaking work. When Dr. Pradeep Kumar and his two assistants shared a single shovel between them, they got to work, desperately and hastily grabbing handfuls of mud, staring in fear every few minutes.
At about six meters deep they stopped. Kumar, convulsed with pain, rolled the wrapped body of his colleague, Dr. Simon Hercules, into the grave, and then quickly covered it with dirt. Under cover of midnight darkness, the three men ran out of the cemetery.
“What happened to Dr. Simon made me lose faith in humanity,” said Kumar. “It should never happen to anyone, ever again.”

In Afghanistan, the health ministry warned that the country is heading toward the peak of the coronavirus when Kabul recorded its biggest one-day surge of new infections amid war across the country.
The health ministry confirmed 110 new Covid-19s in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 1,939. This was caused by the largest increase in infections in a day in Kabul and the continuous increase in transmission in Kandahar.
There were 58 confirmed cases in the capital Kabul, which has so far been the worst affected area in the country with 555 confirmed cases. The city of six million is locked in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus.
Three patients died in Herat on Tuesday, said Abdul Hakim Tamanna, head of the Herat health department, bringing the number of deaths to 61.
The number of new infections continued to rise in Kandahar on Wednesday as 15 new patients tested positive for Covid-19, Kandahar so far has registered 249 cases.
President Ashraf Ghani issued a decree on Monday to release 12,399 prisoners convicted of different crimes to contain the spread of the virus in jails. This is in addition to the 10,000 that are already in the process of being launched.
Wahidullah Mayar, a spokesman for the health ministry, said Wednesday that the peak of the virus is yet to come and said that “a number of new infections are increasing daily, so we are heading towards the peak and I ask people stay home. “
Meanwhile, at least three civilians were killed and eight others were wounded in a suicide attack this morning in Kabul. The Afghan Special Command Unit said the victims were taken to the hospital by Afghan commandos. No group has claimed responsibility.
