Concerns about the spread of the new coronavirus in the local music industry are mounting after some members of K-pop groups tested positive for the infectious virus earlier this week.

Two members of girl group EVERGLOW, Yiren and Si-hyeon, have tested positive for the virus, their management agency Yue Hua Entertainment said on Tuesday.

Yiren tested positive for the first time after she was voluntarily tested following news that one of her acquaintances had contracted COVID-19.

Other members of the six-member girl group also passed the test, and Si-hyeon also tested positive. The remaining four members tested negative.

The results of the screening soon became a bigger case as the group had attended the filming of an episode of the popular music show “Yu Hui-yeol’s Sketchbook” on November 24.

Other singers who participated in the filming, Kim Hyeon-cheol, Joo Hyun-mi, Gummy, and Teen Top, as well as MC Yu Hui-yeol and the show’s staff were also evaluated.

Most of the singers, except Teen Top who is awaiting the results, tested negative, according to their agencies. Yu’s agency said it postponed other schedules for the week and plans to isolate itself as a precaution.

On Tuesday, two members of the K-pop boy band UP10TION also tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Kogyeol and Bit-to tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and Monday, respectively, while the rest of the members tested negative, Top Media said in a statement on its official website.

Bit-to first underwent the screening test after health authorities notified her on Sunday that she had been in contact with a COVID-19 patient.

After it was confirmed that he had contracted the virus the next day, the other members of the band took the tests and Kogyeol also tested positive, according to the agency.

The agency said members who tested positive for the virus will follow the guidelines of health authorities, while the rest of the members and managers will isolate themselves at home for two weeks.

The singers, MCs, and staff who participated in the music shows of local broadcasters MBC and SBS on Saturday and Sunday also took the screening tests, as UP10TION performed on the shows on both dates.

Most of them, including NCT, CNBLUE, aespa, AKMU, and TREASURE, tested negative for the coronavirus.

South Korea has been battling an increase in COVID-19 cases in the Seoul metropolitan area.

On Wednesday, the country added 511 more cases of COVID-19, including 493 local infections, bringing the total number of cases to 35,163, according to the Korea Agency for Disease Prevention and Control.

Health authorities have warned that the country could report daily virus cases of between 700 and 1,000 in the next one to two weeks unless the current pace slows, as clusters of sporadic infections of various sizes continue to appear. (Yonhap)
