Emergency teams have rescued four children who were stranded in water “up to their necks.”

The youths were seen calling for help when they got into trouble while driving home from Mulberry Harbor near Thorpe Bay in Southend on Friday.

HM Coastguard Southend confirmed that they had helped save the children using a hovercraft around 3.15pm.

His mother had called 999 for help from the shore, they said in a statement.

“(The children) tried to return to shore, but the water was too deep and caught them off guard and at one point they were observed with water up to their necks and calling for help,” the coast guard said in a statement.

They warned people not to walk into structures at low tide, adding: “Do not walk into any hazards or man-made structures at low tide that you can see in the ‘near or far’ distance from Southend, it will put their and their families are at risk!

“Check the weather forecast, tide times, and read local danger signs before heading ashore, whether it’s on the beach, salt marshes or in the water.

Coldwater can be silent and deadly. Even on the hottest days. That kills! “

The children were diagnosed with hypothermia and were taken to hospital for treatment.

They then returned home where they are recovering.

The coast guard said: “We wish the four injured a speedy recovery, which we understand that they are now back.”
