Classes can start before August but there is no face-to-face learning: DepEd

MANILA – Public and private schools will be allowed to start the school year before the date prescribed by the Department of Education (DepEd) as long as they do not have “face-to-face” learning, Secretary Leonor Briones said Monday.

Briones said that schools can start classes before August 24, the date set by DepEd, as long as the opening date falls within the period allowed by law, which is anytime between the first Monday in June and last day of August.

“Private schools and perhaps even public schools will be able to open within the time frame provided by law,” he said in a virtual press conference.

Briones told private schools to come up with their own learning continuity plan if they want to start school early.

“They will have to indicate their willingness to perform online [learning]. Perhaps they will tell us what their facilities are, what their methods are. This will still imply the approval of the regional director, “he said.

NO LEARNING FACE TO FACE

Briones said face-to-face learning, which involves physical interaction between students and teachers, will not be allowed until August 24.

Starting August 24, face-to-face learning will only be allowed based on risk assessment by local officials in the school area and subject to compliance with health standards, Briones said.

DepEd is offering schools a “menu” of learning delivery methods, said DepEd Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla. These include online platforms, printed materials that students can take home and blended learning, a combination of classroom learning, and other modes.

Schools can choose modes of learning delivery depending on the public health situation in their localities and the resources available, Sevilla said.

Communications secretary Martin Andanar has also offered to use the government’s radio and television stations to help deliver lessons, according to Briones.

“They are expanding the reach and reach of radio and television stations to implement the continuity of learning program,” said Briones.
