CJ: SC should decide soon the VP electoral protest case

MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court, acting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), should decide soon on the electoral protest presented by the defeat of vice president candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. against vice president Leni Robredo, according to the president of the Diosdado Peralta Supreme Court.

“The Supreme Court wants all electoral cases to end before the term ends [of Congress]”Peralta told reporters at an online press conference on Friday.

“That is the policy of the court. Everyone is aware of that, ”he said.

Peralta, who marked his first year as the country’s 26th chief magistrate, said he had told his colleagues to issue their ruling on Marcos’ petition, which he presented just days after Robredo was sworn in as vice president in June 2016, before the presentation. of the certificate of candidacy for the national elections of 2022 in October next year.

He said he had implemented the policy of ending all election protests within the mandate of elected officials when he headed the House Electoral Tribunal (HRET) during the 17th Congress.

“All cases were resolved before I left [HRET] in June 2019, ”said the Chief Justice.

The PET had already ruled out two of the three causes of Marcos’s actions to nullify the vice president’s victory, including his failed attempt to eliminate Robredo’s advantage in the three pilot provinces, Camarines Sur, Iloilo and Negros Oriental, where he claimed that the cheating they were rampant. .
