MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has elected Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana as the next head of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Malacañang announced on Wednesday.

“The Palace confirms that LGEN Cirilito Sobejana will be the next Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” said presidential spokesman Harry Roque in a statement.

“We trust that General Sobejana will continue to modernize our army and undertake reform initiatives so that the Armed Forces are truly professional in their mandate as protector of the people and the State. We wish General Sobejana all the best in his new term of service as we pray for his success, ”he added.

Sobejana, the current head of the Philippine army and winner of the Medal of Valor, would replace General Gilbert Gapay, who will retire on February 4.

The new head of the AFPs is a member of the 1987 class of the Philippine Military Academy “Hinirang”.
