China’s film industry revenue reaches $ 2.76 billion – The Manila Times

BEIJING: China’s box office revenue in 2020 has exceeded 18 billion yuan ($ 2.76 billion), with the top four revenue contributing nearly half of the profits.

Annual box office gross totaled 18.02 billion yuan as of 9 p.m. Friday, data compiled by the China Movie Data Information Network showed.

Guan Hu’s war epic “The Eight Hundred” topped the annual box office chart, grossing more than 3.1 billion yuan to date. It was followed by the comedy anthology “My People, My Homeland” and the animated feature “Jiang Ziya: Legend of Deification,” which grossed more than 2.8 billion yuan and 1.6 billion yuan, respectively.

“The Sacrifice,” a film set during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid to Korea (1950-1953), came in fourth, generating more than 1.1 billion yuan.

“Leap,” a sports film that tells the stories of the Chinese women’s volleyball team for the past 40 years, came in fifth place with more than 830 million yuan.

Two highly-anticipated films, “The Rescue” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” also opened on Friday, in which industry observers have pinned high hopes of further boosting China’s box office earnings by the end of the year.

“The Rescue” portrays the bravery of a maritime emergency response team, with its leader played by Eddie Peng.

The disaster action film was directed by Dante Lam, the award-winning helmsman of the 2018 hit movie “Operation Red Sea,” which topped China’s box office list in 2018, grossing 3.65 billion yuan.

“Wonder Woman 1984”, the latest American superhero movie, is a sequel to the 2017 commercial hit “Wonder Woman” which grossed more than 600 million yuan in China.

As of 11 pm on Friday, “The Rescue” and “Wonder Woman 1984” earned more than 80 million yuan and 40 million yuan, respectively, at the China box office, pre-sale income included.
