BEIJING: The prevention and control of the Covid-19 epidemic in China faces a major test with sporadic cases resurfacing and the New Year holidays and Spring Festival are fast approaching, the Beijing government said, calling on companies to do not organize business trips outside the capital and abroad and advising residents to leave the city during the Spring Festival holidays as well as that schools and companies stagger their holidays.

Beijing encourages residents to stay in the capital for the holidays and not to visit cities and regions with high or medium risk of Covid-19 infection.

Party officials and government bodies should take the initiative to remain in Beijing during the festival and will be subjected to strict review and approval if they need to leave the capital, Chen Bei, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing municipal government, said at the meeting of the Friday. Press conference.

To reduce the crowding, Beijing will strictly review applications for holding major events and will not host large gatherings such as sporting events or temple fairs, Chen said.

Cinemas, libraries, museums and entertainment venues must operate at 75 percent capacity, he said.

On reducing risks during travel, the capital urged airline, rail and expressway operators to strictly implement temperature control and disinfection. Beijing’s strict measures were unveiled after the capital reported a third new case on Friday this week.

The new case, an employee of Beijing-based Asiana Airlines, tested positive for the virus after returning to South Korea on Tuesday. The Chaoyang District Government verified the situation with South Korea and identified the employee as an asymptomatic carrier.

The Asiana Airlines office building in Chaoyang district has been closed for epidemic prevention and control measures.

The capital has collected 1,255 environmental samples from the building and all tested negative, and 43 close contacts of the carrier have been quarantined.

About 4,345 people in the area have performed nucleic acid tests as of Friday afternoon.
