MANILA – Two more former basketball players have thrown their names into the mix of those who are running for the head coach job at the University of Santo Tomás (UST) on Monday.
Former Alaskan importer Sean Chambers confirmed on a podcast that he applied for the job vacated by Aldin Ayo.
“Yes, I have,” Chambers said when asked if he had already passed a letter of intent to the UST athletic department led by Fr. Ermito De Sagon.
Meanwhile, former interim Blackwater coach Aries Dimaunahan also said he sent a letter of intent to De Sagon’s office.
Chambers, currently the dean of students at Fern Bacon Middle School, is ready to bring his experience in handling students off the court to UST if he gets the go-ahead, which will be advantageous in motivating players, especially since the The team is recovering from the alleged training bubble at Capuy, Sorsogon amid the pandemic that led to Ayo’s indefinite suspension from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
Chambers also said that he wants the Thomasian community to participate in the Growling Tigers campaign next season of UAAP.
“We started first with Tiger Nation. We have to go back to where they used to be,” he said.
Chambers won six Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) titles, all with the Aces, including four consecutive Governor’s Cup championships in the mid-1990s.
He was also a member of the 1996 Alaska Grand Slam team, being his import from the Governor’s Cup.
Chambers also developed a friendship with legendary UST coach Aric Del Rosario, who was on the Aces coaching staff at the time.
On the other hand, Dimaunahan is committed to helping UST “in any way I can”.
Dimaunahan graduated from UST, but never dressed for the Growling Tigers.
His time at the RP Youth Team in the mid-90s prevented him from trying to carve out a niche for himself on the UST basketball team.
However, Dimaunahan began to flourish when he joined Blu in the defunct Philippine Basketball League.
From there, he forged a basketball career that would see him play for five PBA teams and the Asean de San Miguel Basketball League team.
The last time he coached Blackwater was during the 2019 PBA season. (PNA)
