Visayas CENTRAL now has a total of 1,685 cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Of the number, 23 died while 43 yielded negative laboratory results.
According to data from May 9, 2020 published by the Department of Health-Visayas Central (DOH 7) on Sunday, May 10, the region registered 56 new patients with Covid-19.
Of the 56 patients, 39 are from Cebu City; one from the province of Cebu; 15 from the Mandaue City Jail; and one among the returnees.
Cebu City has been maintained to have the highest cumulative number of Covid-19 cases at 1,469. Mandaue City followed by 109; Lapu-Lapu City at age 41; Cebu Province at 39; repatriated in quarantine at age 18; Negroes Oriental at four o’clock; health workers at four; and Bohol to 1 (already downloaded).
The central DOH-Visayas also reported four additional deaths on Saturday, three of whom are residents of Cebu city, while one is from Cebu province.
DOH-Visayas central said that they all died of severe pneumonia due to complications from Covid-19. They also had underlying medical conditions.
The first mortality on Saturday was a 35-year-old man “who had a recurring history of electrolyte imbalance.”
The second and third deaths are persons deprived of liberty (PDL) from the dormitory of the Cebu city jail. The first was a 32-year-old man, while the second was a 51-year-old man who had chronic kidney disease.
The fourth death recorded was from the province of Cebu. He was 39 years old and hypertensive, and he also had a massive stroke.
Cebu City now has a fatality rate, which is calculated by the number of deaths divided by the number of cases multiplied by 100, of 0.75 percent (11 deaths); Cebu Province at 17.95 percent with seven deaths; Negroes Oriental with 50 percent (two deaths) and Mandaue City with 2.75 percent. Across the region, the CFR is at 1.36 percent, which is much lower than the country’s CFR at 6.6 percent.
In a previous statement, the central DOH-Visayas explained why there were discrepancies in the numbers between local CEOs and the figures reflected in the Covid-19 national tracker.
DOH-Central Visatas said the growing capacity of the region’s sub-national laboratory at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and the extensive coverage of contact locating teams have resulted in a large number of results for both positive and negative cases.
For these reasons, the official DOH-Central Visayas Covid-19 figures are delayed one day to allow time for data validation and verification.
The one-day delay in releasing data from the central DOH-Visayas, he said, will give enough time for the official DOH Covid-19 tracker to update to reflect regional numbers.
However, local government units will receive real-time data that they can disclose to the public and the media. (WBS)
