CEBU CITY –– A luxury resort executive in the city of Lapu-Lapu resigned just a week after receiving criticism on social media for his handling of a customer complaint and comments about autism.
Manny González, a resident shareholder of Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, vacated his position effective Tuesday, December 15, “to protect our staff from further indignities.”
“With sincere apologies for my error in judgment, which caused so much trouble for many innocent people, I have decided to resign as Resident Shareholder,” Gonzales was quoted as saying in an official statement released by the resort through Dorothy Palafox of Issues Management Group. , Inc., the newest PR consultant for Plantation Bay Resort and Spa.
The complex also evaluated current protocols and has committed to initiating more proactive efforts and implementing necessary changes within the week.
When he asked for clarification on what a “resident stakeholder” is and what Gonzales has given up on, he said he had not yet consulted with resort management.
González drew people’s ire after his harsh response to an online review from a mother of a child with autism.
The departments of Tourism and Justice, as well as the Human Rights Commission, are conducting separate investigations into the incident.
Mai Pages, the mother of the 6-year-old boy with autism, who felt bad about how they were treated in Plantation Bay on December 6, has yet to respond to a message sent by the Inquirer at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
In a Tripadvisor review of Plantation Bay, Pages shared how they were “discriminated against and excluded” at the resort after at least two lifeguards called their attention to getting their son to stop screaming.
He said his son Fin would yell whenever they went to the water, as he usually does when he is excited or happy.
In a comment now removed on Tripadvisor, Gonzalez responded to Pages, accusing her of “probably deliberately lying” or that she had been misdiagnosed with autism.
Gonzalez said that an uncontrolled cry is not a symptom of autism and told Pages to Google the disorder and “check it out for yourself.”
The Autism Society of the Philippines condemned the actions of the Plantation Bay administration, saying there is a need for disability sensitivity training and a review of the resort’s policies and procedures in accordance with Republic Law 7277 or the Charter Magna for People with Disabilities.
