CEBU CITY – The Cebu station of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) dispatched a rescue team to a distressed freighter that encountered huge waves off the coast of Bohol on Sunday.

According to the PCG Cebu station, MV Good Fortune, owned by Tektite Shipping, “was in danger and dead in the water,” which means that its engine had already stopped around 12:46 pm.

The ship was heading to Tacloban City from Naga City in Cebu and was carrying some 1,639 metric tons of cement. It has 16 crew members.

One of his crew members, John Paul Lato, created a live Facebook showing seawater inside his boat while already wearing life jackets.

However, the Coast Guard report said the ship was able to anchor near Lapinig Island in Bohol while its counterparts there carried out rescue efforts.

“The initial investigation carried out with the captain of the ship revealed that while sailing in said vicinity, they encountered strong winds and large waves and the main engines failed due to the entry of seawater on the deck of the ship,” the report adds.

Shortly before 3 p.m., Lato posted again on Facebook asking for help.

“The Coast Guard help us. The waves crash against us. Our engines are not working and there is already water in the engine room that we are trying to remove. “

According to Lt. Commander Alvin Dagalea, PCG Cebu station chief, his rescue team is still trying to reach the vessel and will post updates soon.
