AN OFFICIAL of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of the Philippines (CBCP) calls on the faithful to pray for the immediate rescue of the crew of the cargo ship that sank off Japan.

In a statement, the vice president of the CBCP Migrant and Itinerant Commission, Bishop Ruperto Santos, asked all Filipinos to offer their prayers for the missing seafarers, who are mostly Filipinos.

“We have to pray more and hope for the best for our 39 Filipino sailors,” Santos said.

“We pray to our Almighty God to give us miracles so that they are forgiven and eventually saved. We must turn to God and trust Him even more,” he added.

The prelate said that they have also asked their priests to offer masses for the rescue of the Philippine sailors.

“We call on our chaplains to pray and offer Holy Masses for the welfare of our seafarers, so that everyone is safe,” Santos said.

He said they also hope that the Japanese authorities and their Philippine counterparts will not give up easily on their search and rescue operations.

“This is a very worrying situation and sad news. We must all work together and do what is necessary to rescue and help them,” Santos said.

Last Wednesday, September 2, the ship registered in Panama, Gulf Livestock 1, sank in Japanese waters after being caught in a typhoon at sea.

The freighter was carrying around 5,800 head of cattle and 43 crew members, including 39 Filipinos.

On Friday, September 4, the Japanese Coast Guard was able to find two survivors, both Filipinos.

The survivors were identified as Eduardo Sareno and Jay-nel Rosales. (HDT / SunStar Philippines)
