MANILA, Philippines – ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya stars cannot cry injustice while ignoring the “serious problems” against their network.
President Alan Peter Cayetano said this during Wednesday’s session and urged celebrities to “find it in his heart” to support due process, as bills seeking renewal of the ABS-CBN franchise are still pending in The House of Representatives.
To recall, several celebrities such as Coco Martin and Kim Chiu have voiced their discontent after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered ABS-CBN to halt its broadcast operations after the network franchise expired on May 4.
“For ABS-CBN celebrities, yes, marami kayong fans are in Congress (they have a lot of fans here). But remember that loyalty to the company that has given you a good life is important, but you cannot cry for the injustice and blame the public servants when you lose your paycheck or your show, however, please disregard the fact , yes, the fact that there are serious problems against your network, “Cayetano said.
Among the issues that Cayetano cited were the alleged ABS-CBN violations of labor, tax and electoral laws.
“Of course, let your voices of support for your network be heard. Of course, know the best propaganda network, “said Cayetano.
“But if you really want to join the public debate, find it in your heart, in your outrage to also support due process and fact-finding, as this issue is imbued with public interest, not just your interest,” he added.
According to Cayetano, there are ABS-CBN employees who are speaking out against their network, and the franchise renewal hearing is “their only time they will be heard.”
“Every time there’s (there is) a 25-year franchise renewal, doon lang pinapakinggan huh (that’s the only time they’ll be heard). Unless you have the courts, you have the labor arbitrators, but how long does it take? He said Cayetano.
“Yung social justice po, kasama po‘ yan sa franchise kasi public services po ito, “he added.
(Social justice is part of the franchise because it is about public services).
During the session, the lower house approved, in second reading, House Bill No. 6732 that grants ABS-CBN a provisional franchise to operate until October 31, 2020.
