WORLD Boxing Organization bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero entered a nearly empty venue in Connecticut on Saturday night wearing a mask for the official weigh-in for his fight against undefeated challenger Duke Micah of Ghana, a sight unknown amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Casimero (29-4, 20 knockouts) easily reached the 118-pound limit by tipping the scales at 117.8 pounds, while Micah weighed in at 117.2 pounds, all set for Sunday’s game.

The Casimero-Micah match will be the co-main event of the night spearheaded by the Charlo brothers. It will be the most important card in boxing since the beginning of the pandemic.

The two boxers will meet in a 12-round match without a hearing at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The new normal did not seem to bother three-division world champion Casimero, whose professional boxing career began in small gyms in the Ciudad Reina del Sur in 2007.

Casimero beat Zolane Tete for the crown in Birmingham last year.

“This is the first time that I have shown the world what I can do. I’m sure I’ll be in my prime, ”Leyte native Ormoc, known by his nickname Quadro Alas, said during an interview with the online channel Showtime Sports.

Casimero, 31, waited seven months in the United States to face former Olympian Micah (24-0-0, 19 KOs).

Casimero arrived in the United States in February hoping to face Japanese champion Naoya Inoue but the fight, which was supposed to take place on April 25, did not materialize.

The pandemic struck, prompting the fight to be rescheduled for August. The fight was eventually called off as Inoue, unable to obtain a travel visa due to the pandemic, was unable to come to the United States.

Micah, 29, will fight for his first world championship fight.

The Casimero-Micah bout is one of five world championships featured on the undercard headed by the Jermall Charlo-Sergiy Derevyanchenko fight for the World Boxing Council middleweight title.
