Residents living near the lower reaches of the Cagayán River were advised on Sunday morning to take the necessary precautions after the Cagayán River reached the upper alarm level.

In its 7 a.m. hydrological forecast for the Cagayán river basin, PAGASA said that floods are threatening the Lower Cagayán and its Pinacanauan tributaries of Tuguegarao, Chico, Pared and Dummun.

PAGASA warned of the continued rise in the water level of Bajo Cagayán as scattered rains and electrical storms are expected.

In its 7 am flood bulletin for the Cagayan River basin, PAGASA said that flooding is a threat in low-lying areas near the lower Cagayan River.

These low-lying areas are Penabalanca, Tuguegarao City, Enrile, Solana, Iguig, Amulung, Alcala, Baggao, Lasam, Gattaran, Lallo, Camalaniugan and Aparri.

Meanwhile, the previous alert level was raised over the upper Cagayan and middle Cagayan rivers and their tributaries.

PAGASA said floods are still possible in these areas.

The end of a frontal system and easterly winds will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over the Cagayan Valley and four other areas on Sunday, PAGASA said in its early morning forecast.

Apart from the Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Aurora, Quezón and the Bicol Region will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms. Flash floods or landslides can occur during moderate to heavy rains at times.

About 40 families were evacuated Saturday from Coreshelter, Barangay Annafunan East in the city of Tuguegarao after it experienced flooding again as a result of incessant rains brought by the end of a cold front.

Cagayan was heavily flooded two weeks ago when heavy rains from Typhoon Ulysses caused the Cagayán River to rise and overflow its banks.

The Magat dam also released water at that time. —KG, GMA News
