MANILA, Philippines – There is a lower threat of coronavirus infection in schools than in homes, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said Wednesday, as she defended the pilot implementation of the face-to-face classes planned in January next year.

“All the studies are said to show that the lowest threat is in schools,” Briones told an Always Ready televised public conference.

“The great possibility is in the home because it is where they spend most of the time and in other places,” he added.

Classes resumed across the country in October and schools used distance learning, a combination of modular and online learning, as campuses remain closed and physical classes remain suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. .

But the government previously announced that it will carry out a pilot implementation of face-to-face classes in selected schools in areas considered low risk for COVID-19.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers, however, said that a low rate of COVID-19 infection is not a guarantee for a safe return to schools, especially since the likely areas for the trial were poor rural localities “where school facilities are less ideal and the staff is more loving.

Briones said 1,114 schools have so far been nominated for the pilot of face-to-face classes next month. But he noted that they would shorten the list as they will also consider other factors such as consent from local government units and parents, as well as school facilities.
