BREAKING: Duterte offers P10M reward to any Filipino who discovers the COVID-19 vaccine

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte will award a P10 million reward to the person who will discover a vaccine against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Malacañang said Tuesday.

“Unang, dahil nga po public enemy po itong COVID-19 hindi lang dito sa Pilipinas kundi sa buong world, inanunsyo po ng Pangulo na siya ay magbibigay ng pabuya na hanggang P10 milyong piso sa kahit sinong Pilipino na makakadiskubre ng vac vac in COV – 19, ”presidential spokesman Harry Roque said at an online press conference.

(First, since COVID-19 is a public enemy not only of the Philippines but of the entire world, the President announces that he will award a P10 million reward to any Filipino who discovers a COVID-19 vaccine.)

A “substantial grant” will also be awarded to the University of the Philippines (UP) and the Philippine General Hospital UP (PGH) to help them develop a vaccine against respiratory disease, Roque said. He did not indicate the amount of the subsidy.

“The best president of the United States can award a substantial grant to UP at SA UP PGH to develop a data package at COVID-19,” said Roque.

(The President also wants to announce that he will award a substantial grant to UP and UP PGH to develop a vaccine for COVID-19.)

The PGH has asked those who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate blood for their study on the cure for the virus.

Duterte has also asked those who have survived from respiratory illness to donate their blood, which can be used to find a cure for respiratory illness.

Previously, the President also said that the Philippines will participate in the study of a possible cure for the virus, as he called for cooperation between countries to develop a vaccine.

Globally, there have been more than 2.4 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 170,000 deaths.

Meanwhile, the national count of confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Monday is 6,459 with 428 deaths and 613 recoveries.
