MANILA – State weather agency PAGASA said Typhoon Ambo could make landfall a second time over Sorsogon after hitting eastern Samar on Thursday.

In an interview on TV Patrol, PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said Ambo could make landfall a second time on Thursday night or Friday morning in Sorsogon if he continues to follow his forecast.

The storm is the first to hit the country this year, causing heavy rains and strong winds in parts of the Visayas and Luzon as the country continued to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

“Generate ma-hold po niya ‘yung maximum sustained winds, reach second landing place mamayang gabi or bukas ng umaga in Sorsogon,” he said.

(You can keep your maximum winds sustained, you can make landfall a second time tonight or tomorrow morning over Sorsogon.)

Once it hits land a second time, the typhoon is expected to weaken as it passes through the Luzon landmass.

“Aasahan po na hihina ‘yan dahil made an interaction with the land mass,” said Aurelio.

(We hope it will weaken because it will interact with the land mass.)

Sorsogon province is currently under the tropical cyclone no. 3)

In an earlier interview on ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo, Sorsogon Governor Francis Escudero said his province is implementing physical distancing between families transferred to evacuation centers, as Typhoon Ambo threatened violent winds and heavy rain.

While Sorsogon has been free of COVID-19 for the past 56 days, Escudero said they would still strictly implement the mandatory use of face masks and sanitation measures at evacuation centers.

The governor had already ordered local government units (LGUs) to undertake a forced preventive evacuation of residents in areas prone to floods and landslides.

Meanwhile, Aurelio said that other areas under Signs No. 3 and 2 should also be prepared in case Ambo strays from his path.

Metro Manila can experience rainy weather from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning.

Aurelio also said that PAGASA can raise Signal No. 2 over Metro Manila and other areas if Ambo remains on his way.

Ambo is also expected to bring rains over central Luzon on Friday night and northern Luzon on Saturday.

Aurelio said Ambo is expected to exit the Luzon land mass through Ilocos Norte on Sunday afternoon. He is then forecast to leave the Philippines’ area of responsibility by Monday afternoon.
