Bolts Burn Hotshots; Aces outnumber elite in PBA ‘bubble’ – The Manila Times

MERALCO Bolts held on to the clutch to burn off a 109-104 overtime win over Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok in the PBA season 45 Philippine Cup “bubble” at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena in Angeles, Pampanga on Tuesday night.

Chris Newsome buried a jump shot with 10.4 seconds remaining in the extra period to bring Meralco’s lead to three, 107-104, en route to the team’s second win in four starts.

The Filipino-American guard / forward was in overtime, scoring eight of his 23 points to help Meralco get back on the winning track after losing to Geneva Gin Kings last Sunday.

“We really had a good chance to win in regulation time, but we missed a free kick and allowed them to get to the line,” Meralco coach Norman Black said.

“In overtime, I said, ‘Hey, we still have a chance; let’s win it! Let’s talk about what happened later. And the guys played to win the game, ”Black continued.

Trevis Jackson played big in the final period, scoring all of his 10 points, triples on three, while rookie Aaron Black also knocked down three triples and finished with 16 points, four rebounds, four dimes and one steal.

It was a balanced score for the Bolts, who had Chlif Hodge, Bong Quinto, Raymond Almazan, Reynel Hugnatan, Allein Maliksi and Jammer Jamito, scoring at least eight points each.

“We just wanted to go out, play with energy [and] play with the heart. We did it tonight, ”Newsome said.

Paul Lee’s 32-point blast went to naught as the Hotshots absorbed their second loss in a row and fell to a 1-3 win-loss list.

In the other game, the Alaska Aces edged out the Blackwater Elite, 120-82, for their second straight win in the PBA “bubble.”

Cebuano rookie Kevin Barkley Ebona made his presence felt with a career-high 24 points with a near-perfect 10-of-11 clip in the most lopsided game yet in the league’s “bubble.”

Robert Herndon scored 21 points, and big man Vic Manuel had 16 points and nine rebounds for Alaska to rack up its second straight win to improve to a 2-2 record after a dismal 0-2 start.

Alaska controlled the game from the start, beating Elite, 38-17, in the first quarter. The Aces didn’t hold back as the lead shot up to 41 points.

The 38-point loss is one of the worst losses in Blackwater franchise history, tying an 89-127 thrashing of TNT in last year’s Philippine Cup and the 85-123 loss of the Rain or Shine Painters. Elasto at the 2015 Governor’s Cup.

Ed Daquioag finished with 18 points, and Mike Tolomia had 10 points for the Elite, which fell to a score of 2-2.
