MANILA, Philippines – The Customs Office (BOC) has intercepted P60 million of smuggled cigarettes through the Manila International Container Port (MICP).
A total of 500 boxes and 1,198 boxes of cigarettes smuggled from China were found in containers imported by Ocean World Enterprises on September 30, BOC said in a report Tuesday.
The BOC said that the products were declared by the importer as various items, including cardboard, furniture and bags, but that upon verification they were discovered as smuggled cigarettes.
Currently, a total of eleven shipments are being investigated on suspicion of illegal cigarette imports, according to BOC.
The importer of the shipment in question will face charges for violation of the Republic Law No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariffs Law, and the regulations of the Internal Revenue Office and the National Tobacco Authority (NTA), he said.
Other shipments from the importer are also now subject to further investigation to determine whether they were also shipped in violation of Customs laws, rules and regulations, according to BOC.
Meanwhile, the MICP emphasized that the smuggling of illegal items into the country will be complied with within the full scope of the law. – Miggy Dumlao, Apprentice
