In the current edition of BillboardHot 100, Blackpink see their latest single “Ice Cream” drop once more, but only slightly. This time, the melody goes back two steps, from no. 66 to n. 68. That slow descent is one more sign that the poppy melody is a real, constant beat, and not just the kind of melody that opens at the top of the count and then disappears immediately.
In fact, with one more shift spent somewhere on the list, Blackpink has made “Ice Cream” history in a big way.
“Ice Cream” has lived on the Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks, and is now the best performance among artists like Blackpink. With its fifth frame on the count, the tune breaks the record for the most time spent on the chart for a South Korean girl group release.
In the last frame, two Blackpink songs were linked to each other as the longest list of all time on the Hot 100 when looking at only tracks powered by South Korean female vocal groups. The band’s 2019 hit, “Kill This Love,” achieved four turns in the rankings, but now that’s just enough to make it rank second on the longest list as “Ice Cream” progresses again.
“Ice Cream” broke Blackpink’s own record as the highest charting single by a South Korean girl group, as it debuted at No. 13 on the Hot 100 a month ago. The melody preceded the band’s full-length debut. The album, which arrived last Friday (October 2) and is expected to open within the top 10 on the Billboard 200 of the next chart.
The song benefited from healthy sales and the inclusion of pop superstar Selena Gomez, who also brought her own fans to the table. Since it first arrived, the tune has been gaining traction on radio, helping it continue its tenure on the Hot 100 as broadcasts and sales drop each week.
At No. 68 alone, “Ice Cream” will most likely continue to find space in the next Hot 100 chart, and perhaps several more after that. In fact, it wouldn’t be strange to see Blackpink’s latest hit double the number of weeks it spent on the Hot 100 of its previous best showing, especially now that the album is out and fans are buying and streaming like never before.
