People in more than 190 countries will learn more about the iconic K-pop girl group BLACKPINK when Netflix releases its original documentary “BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky” today, October 14.
Directed by Caroline Suh, the documentary will focus on the K-pop quartet’s journey from their trainee days to their rise to stardom, including performing at Coachella last year, becoming the first K-pop group to do so. Suh went to South Korea twice, once in 2019 and once this year, for the documentary.
BLACKPINK debuted in 2016 and in just four years, they have become the best K-pop girl group, topping the music charts, earning billions of views for their videos, and winning awards.
During an October 13 virtual press conference on YouTube for the documentary, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa, and director Suh discussed how to make the film and their impressions.
“It is a great honor to stream our documentary on Netflix,” said Rosé.
Jennie said, “We always thought of ways to get closer to the fans and the audience and when we worked with director Suh, we thought we had found the right person. We are looking forward to the release of the documentary. “
Netflix has released documentaries on Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Beyonce, and Jisoo said that “it is an honor to be in line with global female artists like Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Lady Gaga. The four of us have come a long way and we will continue to work hard to show our fans more of ourselves. “
The documentary will also show never-before-seen video footage of BLACKPINK.
“We were able to go back to times when we even forgot ourselves and that brought back many memories. From our training period to debut until today, we wanted to show all the hard work. . . while also sharing the most original and authentic moments on stage that we really couldn’t share with fans before. I hope the Blinks are looking forward to seeing the documentary and our story, ”said Jenny.
Rosé added that “all of our members, when we had the interview, were able to open up and share some of our genuine thoughts.”
While having cameras around them to film the documentary was awkward at first, the members eventually got used to it.
“At first it was a bit awkward. We weren’t very familiar with having a camera around us 24/7, but we think we felt more comfortable, ”revealed Lisa.
The BLACKPINK members share a strong bond as they have been together since their trainee days and Jennie said that they are like family.
“We have worked together since we were teenagers. And we are in our twenties. We were able to share all of our emotions in the world throughout this journey. Of course we are like a family. We feel very comfortable sharing our opinions with others, ”he said.
Through her nephew, Suh said that she learned more about K-pop and “Light Up the Sky” focuses on the history of BLACKPINK. “I knew BLACKPINK but didn’t know much. I was very excited. I am Korean-American, so anything that has a Korean theme interests me. I think we were interested in telling the story of how BLACKPINK came together and how these four girls had a path that led to BLACKPINK. And then what is it like to be part of this huge phenomenon, “he said.
One of the things she learned about BLACKPINK while making the documentary is that the girls worked hard to get where they are now.
“I think something I learned about his history was that his success is very difficult to achieve. They worked very hard for it. Each of the members has a very strong and fierce will, ”he said.
Jennie said, “I think the four of us have a very clear purpose that we wanted to achieve as members of BLACKPINK. For every moment we spent together to achieve them, we wanted to make sure that the four of us, none of us got tired of it. We were all together. “
When asked what she wanted to say to herself in the past as a trainee, Jennie said, “I would say ‘enjoy the moment’ if I had to go back in time. I think not just for me, but for all four of us, because we all had monthly grades that came out when we were trainees. So at the time, I think, we couldn’t really think that these moments were really precious. I’d like to say ‘get it right’ and ‘keep going’ because you will become BLACKPINK. “
Rosé said that BLACKPINK’s proudest moment is every time they return to the music scene.
“I think every time we come back, every time we come back with new music and new music videos, we really put it all together. And every time we see the result, we feel really proud. Sometimes when we are in the routine, there are many things that distract us. But once we see the results, I would say that that moment is when we feel most satisfied, “he said.
Jisoo said that the key to BLACKPINK’s success is that they always try to bring something new for their fans and the public.
“Music doesn’t stop at music these days. The images are important and the public listens to music, they like to participate, to imitate it too. It has changed to something that has many and very different factors involved. In that sense, we always want to bring something new to the audience. And I think our fans appreciate it and that’s why they love us. We are very, very grateful for that, ”he said.
Regarding aspiring singers, Lisa advised: “I think the most important thing is to find what you really love. Always have confidence in yourself, take care of yourself and love yourself ”.
Suh said that she was most impressed by BLACKPINK’s determination to succeed in their careers.
“The first time I met them, I was backstage before a performance. They were all down to earth, bubbly, warm and friendly, which I think is true. While we were filming, I got to see the other sides of them. And I really think what they have in common is this tenacity. And that’s what impressed me the most. They were all determined, you know, to pull it off, ”he said.
When asked what his goals are in 2021 and 10 years later, Jisoo said, “Recently, we have released our first official album. So we want to do our best on that. Looking ahead, we want to keep challenging ourselves, keep thinking about what kind of new aspects. We’ve done it “.
She added: “We thought about what kinds of new things we wanted to show the world. And because music has now become a very widespread art form, we want to be able to bring the best of it to all of our fans. In that sense, I think the documentary ‘Light Up the Sky’ will be one of the first steps to achieve this. I think it will help us to do it even more in the future. In 10 years, we hope that we will continue to be BLACKPINK. As we have always been “.
