WASHINGTON – President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration will be a scaled-down version of customary traditions that will not jeopardize the health of Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic, a senior adviser said Sunday.
“I think it will definitely have to be changed,” said incoming White House chief of staff Ron Klain. “Obviously, this will not be the same type of inauguration that we had in the past.”
The Democratic president-elect was repeatedly attacked by Republican President Donald Trump for wearing masks and practicing other COVID mitigation measures during the campaign for the White House.
Trump, who did not follow the same precautions, contracted COVID-19 himself in early October, and there have been multiple outbreaks among White House staff and in his own family.
Klain said that Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will continue to emphasize safe practices when they take office on January 20, but did not elaborate.
Presidential inaugurations have traditionally featured an induction and speech by the new president at the United States Capitol before the crowds returned to the National Mall, as well as a lunch with lawmakers and a parade to the White House.
Biden’s team is consulting with House and Senate leaders on details and best practices, Klain said.
The result will likely be a “reduced version of existing traditions,” “This Week” told ABC.
Klain referred to the spontaneous “street dance” that erupted after Biden’s victory was declared on November 7, four days after the election, after a record number of mail-in ballots were tabulated across the country. .
“We know that people want to celebrate. Here’s something to celebrate, ”he said. “We just want to try to find a way to do it in the safest way possible.”
