Bato, Catanduanes police chief fired after statements about shooting in Tarlac

MANILA, Philippines – Bato, Catanduanes Police Chief, Police Captain Ariel Buraga, was fired after his controversial comment in which he said respecting police officers is the lesson of the gruesome shooting in Tarlac province, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.

“Mam confirmed po according to PD [Provincial Director] Catanduanes po. Research your COP [chief of police] even though he was relieved [Buraga]. Procedures for rin po natin, ”PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Ildebrandi Usana told reporters in a text message when asked for confirmation on Buraga’s relief.

(It is confirmed according to the provincial director of Catanduanes. The police chief will be under investigation despite his release. It is part of our procedures).

Usana said that Buraga was relieved by his violation of PNP policies on social media. He added that Mayor Juan Rodulfo de Bato, Catanduanes recommended that the police chief be relieved of the controversial comment.

“He was also recommended by the mayor to be relieved of his position due to his [Facebook] charge or reaction that didn’t sit well with your being a cop [officer] po, ”Usana said.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Buraga said that people should respect law enforcement officers after Police Sergeant Major Jonel Nuezca shot and killed Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank outside their home in Paniqui, Tarlac el Sunday.

Nuezca, meanwhile, remains in detention and now faces criminal complaints before the court.
