MANILA, Philippines – The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) can still operate safely despite being suspended for decades, said an official with the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) amid the government’s plans to reactivate the plant once more.
In a radio interview on Sunday, PNRI director Carlo Arcilla said that a disaster similar to the one that happened at Chernobyl in 1986 would not occur at BNPP. PNRI is an agency under the Department of Science and Technology.
According to Arcilla, the design of the Chernobyl power plant was different from that of BNPP, which has a containment structure in the event of a nuclear leak accident.
The Chernobyl plant used four Soviet-designed RBMK-1000 nuclear reactors, a design now universally recognized as inherently flawed.
Former President Corazón Aquino rejected the BNPP’s 621-megawatt operation in 1986 due to security concerns.
