FIVE days after the death of former Dumanjug mayor Nelson García, his younger brother, Barili Mayor Marlon García, died in a private hospital in Cebu City at dawn on Sunday, September 6, 2020.

Marlon, 58, previously tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

His passing was first announced on Facebook by his brother Winston.

Nelson, 61, died on Tuesday, September 1. The cause of his death was not disclosed. He was buried on Saturday, September 5.

Marlon and Nelson had been admitted to Chong Hua Hospital.

The vice mayor of Barili, Julieto Flores, formally assumed the position of interim mayor last August. 27.

Winston, president of the Cebu CFI Community Cooperative, did not mention the cause of Marlon’s death.

In his Facebook post, Winston, former president and CEO of the Government Services Insurance System, said: “Losing a brother is painful enough, but losing another brother in the same week, my heart can’t move on.” .

“The true fighter that he was, my brother, Marlon has been fighting for his life for the past few weeks.”

Marlon was one of seven Cebu mayors who were infected with Covid-19. The others were mayors Junard Chan from the city of Lapu-Lapu, Sun Shimura from Daanbantayan, Michael Angelo Sestoso from Alcoy, Danilo Diamante from Tuburan, José Antonio Pintor from Asturias and Lakambini Reluya from San Fernando.

It was Marlon’s sister, Governor Gwendolyn García, who announced her battle against Covid-19 on August 10.

On August 6, the governor was tested for respiratory disease after delivering her message during the celebration of the 451st Cebu Charter Day. Her result was negative.

“He was passionate in his advocacy for the betterment of the lives of the people of Barili, Cebu, whom he served as mayor since 2016, and previously, as deputy mayor. He wholeheartedly served the Province of Cebu as Vice President of Internal Affairs for the League of Municipalities of the Cebu section of the Philippines, ”the governor said of Marlon in a post on her Facebook page.

“In the weeks leading up to his untimely passing, Mayor Marlon was eager to be fired so that he could continue his tireless efforts for the economic revival of Barili,” he said. “Mayor Marlon fought valiantly to the end.”

Marlon graduated from San Carlos University with a Law Degree and was a legislative officer in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1989, according to the Barili Municipal Government website.

He served as Assistant Vice President of AMA Computer College for Cebu Operations until 1992. He became a Contract Manager at the University of Houston from 2000 to 2005.

Marlon’s other siblings are Cebu Third District Representative Pablo John Garcia and Byron Garcia, former Capitol security consultant and director of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center.
