Barangay Mauway in Mandaluyong will go under ‘total blockade’

MANILA, Philippines – The Mandaluyong City local government is slated to place Barangay Mauway under “total closure” for two days after the increase in COVID-19 cases in the barangay and in the city.

Barangay Mauway, which has the highest number of cases in the city, will be under total blockade starting at 12:00 a.m. May 11 until 11:59 p.m. May 13 as outlined in Mandaluyong Executive Order No. 16, 2020 series.

Under the total blockade, all residents will be prohibited from leaving their homes unless it is for an emergency, all establishments, including shops and markets, will be closed, while unauthorized vehicles will not be able to leave or enter the area .

Meanwhile, frontline workers and essential workers will still be able to go to their workplaces, according to the announcement by the city government.

Barangay Mauway currently has 70 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 44 of which are active, while 23 have recovered and three have succumbed to the disease. Meanwhile, the entire city has 454 COVID-19 cases, 305 of which are active, 112 are recoveries and 37 are deaths, as of Friday at 4 p.m.

The Mandaluyong government said the increase in cases is due to its improved method of mass testing. He assured that citizens will receive food packages before said closure, while selected residents will undergo rapid tests for antibodies.

Barangay Addition Hills, meanwhile, has the second highest number of cases in the city with 58 confirmed infections, 40 of which are active while 12 have recovered. Six, meanwhile, have succumbed to COVID-19.

The Welfareville complex in said barangay has been under a total lockdown for a week since Thursday. The city is also seeking to conduct rapid tests on 3,000 Barangay Addition Hills residents.

The country currently has 10,463 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 1,174 recoveries, and 696 deaths. In a situation report, the World Health Organization stated that 86.7% of all cases in the country are mild.
